Maternity and Infant Care Program

Maternity and Infant Care Program

Empowering Healthy Births in Haiti

Medical Missionaries is dedicated to providing quality healthcare to those who need it most.  To that end, we opened and support St. Joseph Clinic in Thomassique, Haiti.  As part of the clinic we began the Maternity and Infant Care Program as an example of our commitment to empowering healthy births and reducing maternal and infant mortality.

Our Team
Our team of experienced healthcare professionals includes:
  • 3 full-time midwives
  • 1 nurse skilled in midwifery

Together, they provide comprehensive care to expectant mothers, including:
  • Pre-natal consultations
  • Birth assistance
  • Postpartum and newborn health education

Expanding Care to Remote Villages
Recognizing that 75% of births in the region occur at home, we’ve established a training program for traditional birth attendants (Matwons). Our goal is to ensure that every birth, regardless of location, is a safe and healthy one.

Training and Empowering Matwons
Our Matwon training program includes:
  • 22 weeks of comprehensive training
  • Ongoing education and support
  • Provision of “clean birthing kits” for safe deliveries

To date, we’ve trained 44 Matwons, who have gone on to facilitate hundreds of safe births in their communities.

Impactful Results
Our program has achieved remarkable results, including:
  • Over 50 births at St. Joseph Clinic per month
  • Thousands of safe births facilitated by Matwons in outlying villages during the same period
