International Aid
We received thanks from Birthright Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) for supplies we sent. They thanked us on behalf of all the people they serve, “especially the thanks of mothers, children and needy babies…,” and said that these supplies “reduce misery, maternal mortality, and give hope.” Thanks to our volunteers and supporters, the supplies we sent are now helping people throughout the Ivory Coast, especially expectant mothers in this country that suffers from high levels of maternal mortality. We have also recently given equipment and supplies for medical trips to Rwanda, Cameroon and Haiti.
Winter Care Kits
We recently partnered with a DC Peace Corps volunteer, Lila Wael, to create winter care kits for the homeless of the Washington, DC area. Each kit contains basic toiletries, water, and snacks to provide someone in need during that winter months. 46 hygiene kits were donated by Medical Missionaries to be distributed along with the 50 kits that Ms. Wael contributed to the effort by fundraising through her personal and professional networks. These kits will be handed out gradually throughout the winter months.
Year of Nurse and the Midwife
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as the “International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife,” in honor of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.Nurses have been an essential part of Medical Missionaries from our early days when Dr. Gil Irwin recruited doctors and nurses to join him on medical teams to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. These volunteers have grown into a dedicated group of over 200 nurses, doctors, dentists, and others who volunteer to help the poorest of the poor by working with Medical Missionaries.
Nurses have not only traveled internationally on medical teams (often organizing the logistics), but they also support our work locally, from helping at the office and events, to organizing, packing and delivering medical and household supplies to be given to those in need in the USA and internationally. We are grateful for all the nurses and midwives that have contributed to our efforts throughout the years!
