Toy Drive for Appalachia

Appalachian Toy Drive
Appalachian Toy Drive

We are accepting donations of toys for children in Appalachia to help brighten their holidays.  Please drop off or mail new, unwrapped toys at our office, 9590 Surveyor Ct., Manassas, VA 20110.  You can also make an online monetary donation. Toys and monetary donations will be accepted through December 10th.

The toys will be delivered to the Rock Lick Food Pantry in Grundy, VA.  Rock Lick serves those in need in both southwestern Virginia and West Virginia as well as eastern Kentucky.  Medical Missionaries continues to assist Rock Lick with food, baby, and toiletry items, and recently helped them to get their only truck repaired so they could more efficiently deliver food and supplies to those in need.

We would like to thank Dr. George Bazaco and his family for hosting this event at his beautiful Doukénie Winery.  All who attended enjoyed tasting Doukénie’s delicious wines and were treated to  yummy Haitian food and musical entertainment provided by Medical Missionaries board member, Gachard Jean Pierre and friends.

We also would like to thank Jim and Olivia Erving, Christine DiStasio, and Joan Irwin for putting together this event, as well as all of those who donated items for the raffle.  We appreciate everyone who attended for their continuing support of Medical Missionaries. This event raised $3,000 to go towards our efforts.

Providing Support

October has been a busy month in support of medical/surgical teams with health care supplies and equipment for Cameroon, Venezuela, Jamaica and Malawi.  We have also been preparing supplies and medicines for a medical team’s trip to St. Joseph Clinic in Haiti and the Banica Mission in the Dominican Republic.  We loaded another sea container of health care supplies, beds, wheel chairs, etc. to send to Guinea Bisseau in West Africa. We thank all of our volunteers and donors who help us with this work

Haiti Happenings

St. Joseph Clinic’s dental assistant, Mis Lovely, kicked off another year of the Dental Hygiene Program in one of the local Thomassique schools. She instructed the students on how to properly brush their teeth and taught the kids a new song about dental hygiene. The Fellows and Clinic staff are looking forward to working with the students this year to improve their dental health and overall well-being.

Speaking of children, the St. Joseph Clinic family has grown by one. We would like to congratulate Dr. Lawrence and his wife, Molienne, on the birth of their daughter, Lenska Gracy Mercier, born Saturday, October 12th! Both mom and baby are doing well. When asked what it’s like to be a father, Dr. Lawrence reports that there is a lot of crying, eating and sleeping!

Kyra and Logan, at Mòn Prenti (Prayer Mountain)

Recently, our Fellows, Kyra and Logan, hiked Mòn Prenti (Prayer Mountain) with friends. It was a very difficult hike, but the views from the top were worth it! The hike gave them a wonderful moment to pause and look out in awe of Haiti’s beautiful land and to say a little prayer of thanks for the opportunity to live and work in Thomassique.
